The measure, resurrected by President Gabriel Boric, was unanimously approved by the Senate and by a large majority in the lower house.
“What price do you put on being able to sing [to your child] in the evening? What price do you put on being able to go out for a walk, to breathe, after a day’s work? (…) What price do you put on spending time with your family or on your own, having time to think? That’s certainly not covered by standardized productivity indices.” On August 23, 2022, from the presidential palace, Chilean President Gabriel Boric resurrected a measure aiming to cut working hours from the current 45 hours a week to 40 hours a week on the same pay. A campaign pledge made by the youngest president in the country’s history, currently 37 years old, paving the way for a cultural shift in Chile whereby life should not only be steered by work.
