Chilean Cottage Pie

  • 1 kg (2 lbs 3 oz) potatoes, peeled
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 2 tbsp butter (for the mashed potatoes)
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1½ large onions, cubed
  • Pepper to taste
  • Paprika
  • Dried oregano
  • Ground cumin
  • 300 g (11 oz) ground beef (flank or rump)
  • 2 hard boiled eggs, quartered
  • 2 tbsp golden raisins, soaked
  • ½ cup black olives
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • Optional: Granulated sugar for the top


  • Step 1 – Cook the potatoes in a pot in a generous amount of salted water until they are soft. Remove from the water and mash using a potato masher.
  • Step 2 – Add the butter and hot milk (if it is too thick, add more milk.) Season with salt and pepper and set aside.
  • Step 3 – For the filling: Sauté the onion and ground garlic in oil in a pan. Sweat for a few minutes. Season with salt, paprika, dried oregano and a pinch of ground cumin. Add the ground beef and cook for 5 minutes.
  • Step 4 – To assemble the dish: Place the meat filling in a baking dish. Add the hard boiled egg, raisins and olives.
  • Step 5 – Cover with mashed potatoes and sprinkle with granulated sugar. Finally, add a pat of butter to the top.
  • Step 6 – Bake for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve hot.
