Chile leads Latin American film industry in Cannes Film Festival 2022

Ajustes de accesibilidad

From May 17 to 28, the 74th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will be held. Each year, the festival brings together the most outstanding works of the seventh art.

Chile has the largest Latin American presence in this edition, with four films in the different sections of the festival.

Renowned documentary filmmaker Patricio Guzmán will premiere Mi País Imaginario (My Imaginary Country) in the Special Screenings Official Selection, the same category in which La Cordillera de los Sueños (The Cordillera of Dreams) was shown in 2019, winning him the Golden Eye Award for Best Documentary. In this work, the director returns to the country of his birth to film firsthand the political and historical process that Chile has experienced since 2019. The production includes the testimonies of journalist Mónica González, the feminist collective Las Tesis, Mapuche Constitutional Convention representative Elisa Loncón, writer and actress Nona Fernández, photographer Nicole Kramm and political scientist Claudia Heiss.

In the Directors’ Fortnight section, 1976, Manuela Martelli’s feature directorial debut, and Pamfir, a co-production with Ukraine, stand out. The short film Las Criaturas que se Derriten Bajo el Sol (The Creatures that Melt in the Sun) by Diego Céspedes will be presented at the prestigious Critics’ Week competition.

Docs-In-Progress Showcase Chile

As part of Cannes Docs -the documentary section of the Cannes Film Festival’s important Marché du Film-, Chiledoc has organized the Docs-In-Progress Showcase Chile, in which four projects will be presented: Notas para una Película (Notes for a Film) directed by Ignacio Agüero, La fabulosa máquina de cosechar oro (The Fabulous Gold-Harvesting Machine) by Alfredo Pourailly, Malqueridas (Unloved) by filmmaker Tana Gilbert and Asteroide 2518 directed by Amanda Rutllant.

In addition, the documentary Nuestra Memoria (Our Memory) by Matías Rojas will participate in Spotlighted Projects, a space where potential co-producers and financing partners are invited to get involved with high-quality international documentary projects.
