The good news for those of us working in marine conservation is that more and more countries are leading change and making a serious commitment to protect their land and ocean. That includes several Latin American nations led by Chile, Panamá and Costa Rica.
Chile, for example, already has more than 43% of its waters under MPA (marine protected areas) status, but decided to go even further. In early June, the government proposed the creation of an MPA offshore, in the Salas y Gómez and Nazca mountains ranges, two underwater mountain ranges that stretch 2,900 km across the Pacific and are home to some of the greatest biodiversity in the ocean.
